Curious George Escaped the Nazi Invasion

From the NY Times, By Edward Rothstein Published: March 25, 2010

The mischievous traveling monkey that became a childhood favorite, Curious George, might never have become an American curiosity had it not been for the Nazi invasion of France.

His creators escaped oppression, and he eventually became an icon.

Now The Jewish Museum, in New York is honoring thier achievement in a new exhibit that shares the story of the husband-and-wife creators of the “good little monkey,” H.A. and Margret Reys were German Jews living in Paris on the eve of the Nazi invasion. During their five-month escape in 1940, they fled on bicycles with their drawings, including one of a mischievous monkey then called Fifi.

"If the Reys had not escaped from France by bicycle to Spain to Portugal, we would have never known Curious George," said the museum's director of education. The Reys created the monkey character that is always on the run because it represented themselves always on the run.

Fifi’s name was later changed to George once the couple arrived in the U.S. because publisher Houghton Mifflin had doubts about the name Fifi for a boy monkey. The Reys have sold tens of millions of copies around the world. The exhibit, titled "The Wartime Escape: Margret and H.A. Rey's Journey from France," is based on a 2005 children's book by Louise Borden about the Reys. The display will show Allan Drummond's original illustrations of Borden's book explaining the couple's story.

“Curious George Saves the Day” (through August 1, 2010 at The Jewish Museum in New York, then at San Francisco’s Contemporary Jewish Museum from November 14-March 13, 2011) chronicles the Reys’ daring escape — and how their fictional stowaway lent a hand.

Free Graffiti Space!! (No Kidding)

From your friends at LAVA:

The leaders of UConn Facilities and The Front Desk at UConn have donated their time and effort in helping us renovate and recycle the abandoned handball court between the North and Northwest residence halls. It is now the UConn Open Art Space, a legalized graffiti and painting zone with official signage, ladders, lexan painting panels, and two huge concrete walls for painting (possible night lighting to come).  LAVA is so happy and proud to have facilitated this change and contributed to campus culture in this manner. We celebrated the opening of this space with musical guests Sleepwell, Neighbors, Tyler Bussey, and Benedict Gagliardi, and free spraypaint for all.

The Secret of Kells

Looking to connect your Art History studies to your love for visual storytelling and animation? Look no further! Up for an Oscar in best animated film, this Irish entry is visually intriguing and ought to tie in with those 3 credits of Medieval Art that you've been studied. Looks good to me!

An excerpt from NPR:

In 'Kells,' The Secret Pleasures Of A Low-Tech Art

"...The visual style the filmmakers have chosen is striking and quite beautiful at times, but deliberately flat, like pictures in a medieval manuscript. There's no 3-D trickery, no moving backgrounds. Trees are stylized, people geometric (one monk is triangular, another is essentially a curve with a bald patch), and the movement is as primitive as in Saturday morning cartoons. When you think that at the Oscars, The Secret of Kells is going up againstUp, its chances seem slim — and probably are.
But there's something kind of captivating about a film that's been painstakingly drawn to glorify the craft of illustration, and that's comfortable using retro techniques."

The Barker Character, Comic and Cartoon Museum

The Barker Character, Comic and Cartoon Museum in Cheshire CT houses thousands of items from comic strips, cartoons, TV and advertising memorabilia that have been collected by Herb and Gloria Barker. The collection is uniquely American and tells us where our heads were at, and where our hearts are still, from the late 19th Century to now.

This is a museum which must be seen to be believed, and it is fascinating for the whole family. There are few museum exhibits of popular history that will engross your children as much as they do you. GI Joe, Shirley Temple, Raggedy Ann, Snoopy, board games and cereal box prizes. They’re all here.

The Barker Character, Comic, and Cartoon Museum is an astoundingly detailed walk through memory lane. Your memory. Your parents’ memories. Even your grandparents. If they played as children, they played with the stuff in this fantastic museum.

Open Wednesday through Saturday, 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
Admission: $5 for adults

Another tribute paid to Justice Sotomayor -- her own comic book!

Sonia Sotomayor made history in the summer of 2009: That’s when she took her seat as the first Hispanic justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. This April Bluewater Productions will feature her journey, profiling Sotomayor in the latest edition of its Female Force biographical comics.
Sotomayor’s rise to the highest court in the land is a truly inspirational tale. Because of this, it is a perfect fit for Bluewater Productions’ Female Force series of biographical comics.
In April, Bluewater will ship Female Force: Sonia Sotomayor, a 32-page comic, to retailers across the country. This will give readers a chance to join writer Robert Schnakenberg and artist Cesar Feliciano as they trace Sotomayor’s journey from the Bronx to the Supreme Court.
“Sonia Sotomayor’s story illustrates everything that is right about the United States,” said Bluewater President Darren G. Davis. “Sotomayor came from a poor family. Her father didn’t even speak English. Yet she has risen to become one of the most powerful people in the country, all because she worked hard.”
Female Force: Sonia Sotomayor is the latest in Bluewater Productions’ Female Force line of biography comics about female empowerment. Previous issues have profiled Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, talk show giant Oprah Winfrey, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and Twilight author Stephenie Meyer. The series is one of Bluewater’s most successful, with several issues, including one focusing on First Lady Michelle Obama, selling out of multiple print runs.
“I’m proud to bring to life the story of Sonia Sotomayor,” Davis said. “As with all of our Female Force comics, I hope her story provides inspiration to others.”
